Calm The Flush

Rosacea and Facial Redness Treatment

Persistent facial redness, flushing that will not settle, visible broken vessels across the cheeks and nose, a nose that has thickened over years. Rosacea is a chronic condition rather than a one-off problem, and like melasma it is managed rather than cured — but the visible redness and the vessels themselves respond to laser treatment better than almost anything else available.

What Rosacea Is

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition of facial skin, characterised by flushing, persistent redness, visible small blood vessels, and in some people papules and pustules that look like acne but are not. It tends to run in families, is more common in fair skin, and often begins in the thirties or forties. In some men it progresses to rhinophyma, a thickening of the tissue of the nose that is a structural problem rather than a colour one.

How We

Treat It

The redness and the vessels are treated with light that is absorbed by haemoglobin in the blood rather than by the skin around it. The vessel heats, collapses, and is cleared by the body.

  • 532 nm for fine, superficial vessels and diffuse redness near the surface
  • 1064 nm for larger and deeper vessels, and for skin where a shorter wavelength would be riskier
  • Broadband light for generalised background redness across the whole face

Which wavelength is used depends on the size and depth of the vessel, which is why a device with only one option treats rosacea less completely. Rhinophyma is a separate problem and is addressed with ablative resurfacing to reshape the thickened tissue.

Dr. Michael Lindley, MD, performs these treatments, assisted by Kathryn, RN.

What Sets It Off

Rosacea has triggers, and knowing yours is half the management:

  • Sun exposure and heat
  • Alcohol, particularly red wine
  • Spicy food and hot drinks
  • Exercise and temperature swings
  • Stress
  • Some skincare ingredients, particularly alcohol-based and strongly exfoliating products

New Orleans is not a kind climate for rosacea. Heat and humidity are both triggers, and the social calendar runs on the other ones.

Before & After

Expect

What To

Visible broken vessels often clear dramatically, sometimes in a single treatment. Diffuse background redness usually needs a series of three or more, with gradual improvement across them.

Flushing is the hardest component to treat, because it is a vascular reactivity rather than a fixed vessel. It improves but rarely disappears.

And rosacea is chronic. Treated vessels do not come back, but the condition continues to produce new ones, so most patients return for maintenance every year or two. That is a normal outcome, not a failure of treatment.

Vessels Cleared.

Redness Calmed.

If you have spent years choosing green-tinted makeup and avoiding red wine in public, this is treatable, and more completely than most people assume. It needs managing afterwards, and we will be straight with you about that from the first visit.
