Sun damage is rarely confined to the face, and treating the face alone creates an obvious line.
We generally recommend treating the face, neck, chest and hands as a set rather than in isolation.
Pigment absorbs certain wavelengths of light far more than the surrounding skin does. Deliver that light in a controlled pulse and the pigment absorbs the energy, breaks up, and is carried away by the body over the following one to two weeks. The skin around it is left alone.
Treated spots typically darken over several days, come to the surface like coffee grounds, and flake away. It looks worse before it looks better, which is worth knowing before you plan around an event.

Most patients need one to three treatments for significant clearance, spaced several weeks apart. Downtime is limited: redness for a day, then darkening and flaking of the treated spots over about a week.
The results last as long as you protect them. New spots form with new sun exposure, so daily sunscreen is what keeps you from repeating this in three years.
One important caveat. Not every brown spot is sun damage. Some are melasma, which behaves completely differently and gets worse with aggressive treatment, and a small number are lesions that need a different kind of attention altogether. Dr. Lindley examines every spot before treating it.
